The Olde News Blog – Bulletin “DON’T GET LOST IN THE SHUFFLE” As part of our effort to stay ahead of the curve we monitor trends world wide. A recent browse of the Internet turned up this finding by The Swedish Research Institute of Trade: “Swedish group picks GPS device Christmas gift of 2007 By LOUISE NORDSTROM, The Associated Press | Thursday, November 15, 2007 STOCKHOLM, Sweden - Santa may get a little help finding chimneys in Sweden this year: GPS gadgets were named the Nordic country’s top Christmas gift for 2007. The Swedish Research Institute of Trade, which has handed out the “Christmas Present of the Year” title since 1988, said the small navigation device has evolved from an expensive, complicated tool into a cheap and user-friendly travel buddy. Last year the instituted chose the audio book, following a poker set in 2005 and a flat screen TV in 2004. Swedes are expected to spend more than $1,000 per person on their Christmas shopping. Jonas Arnberg, an institute analyst, said the gadget “has now become a component in almost every car. And it’s really something that will explode when it comes to mobile phones.” Swedish sales of the devices, which can pinpoint a user’s location through Global Positioning System satellites, more than doubled in 2006.” Poster’s Note: Jonas’s prediction may be a little behind U.S. technology since we currently have several models of mobile phones available with GPS capability. He is correct however; the use of GPS is exploding. Take this opportunity to list your business free at www.GPSantiqueatlas.com.

INTERIOR DESIGN DEAL INKED WITH ANTIQUE SCHOOL Florida – For those who’ve always wanted to be on the “design” side of antiques rather than the merchandising end, the antique-home-study–course offered by the Asheford Institute of Antiques (AIA) may have just what you’ve been looking for. In a recently signed agreement between the AIA and renowned interior designer Sue Strong (author, Upscale Design, For Upscale Clients), the Asheford school has begun to offer content specific courseware to those interested in becoming “antique interior designers.” According to a published press release from the school, spokesman, Anthony Drew said that the Institute had been contacted by a number of interior design institutions about the need for instruction in the field of antiques. Drew said, “After that, it was just a matter of finding someone we really believed could help blend antiques and interior design, and that’s where Ms. Strong came in…” During the meeting to formalize the addition of the interior design curriculum to the Asheford program, Ms. Strong was quoted as saying, “The Asheford Course on antiques is a natural fit for interior designers, since it already devotes a large number of lessons to the placement and beauty of antiques in the home.” She went on to say that, “Interior designers are finding it more and more necessary to have a good knowledge of antiques in order to get the top jobs.” Director of the Asheford Institute, Charles Green, who was also on hand for the signing, commented that, “This really works well both ways – antique enthusiasts can learn how to add “antique interior design” to their list of skills, aside from the traditional selling of antiques, and interior designers can add antiques to their list of credentials for potential clients – it’s a win-win situation for all involved.” Green noted later, that the Asheford Course would continue to remain focused on antiques, but that this addition to the program would simply give students, “… another avenue of possibility to explore.” When asked about the launch date for the new curriculum, AIA spokesman, Anthony Drew said, “It’s already in effect.” For readers seeking more information about the antique course offered by the Asheford Institute of Antiques, they can be contacted at: (877) 444-4508 or visit their web site at; www.asheford.com.
