Seeking vendors of collectibles, arts, and crafts
Betty Boop collectors and fans are converging on central Wisconsin this August. The attraction that’s drawing them in is the first Betty Boop Festival Wisconsin, taking place the first week-end in August in Wisconsin Rapids, located on the Wisconsin River in the scenic center of Wisconsin. A highlight of the festival, especially for Betty Boop fans, is the Arts and Collectibles show, featuring Betty Boop collectibles expert Denise Hagopian. Why all the fuss? Betty Boop, it turns out, is practically a native of Wisconsin Rapids. The town was the birthplace of Grim Natwick, top original animator of Betty Boop for Fleischer Studios. And now the home town of Betty Boop animator Grim Natwick is celebrating the 80th anniversary of Betty’s first film appearance with a four day festival. Films, exhibits, vendors, a motorcycle show & ride, live musical performances, a film festival, and a Friday night Betty Boop Bash are all part of the activities. Wisconsin Rapids sits in the very heart of the state. Just an hour north of interstate Highway 90 finds you in downtown Wisconsin Rapids, site of most of the activities and the meeting point for collectors. The Arts and Collectibles show opens at 10 am on Saturday, August 7, at the Hotel Mead, a Wisconsin Rapids landmark, and continues through Sunday, August 8. Registration for vendors is available on the festival website, www.BettyBoopFestivalWi.com, and the festival is open to collectibles of all types, not just Betty Boop items. The main attraction at the show is sure to be a series of talks with California expert Denise Hagopian (she ran her own Betty Boop festival for nearly two decades), who can be seen appraising Betty Boop memorabilia on leading antiques shows, or as a special guest on Betty Boop ship cruises. Denise will speak on topics as varied as the early days of animation, the Fleischer Studio where Betty first came to life, 1930’s Japanese Betty Boop, and the Betty Boop revivals of the 1950’s and 1980’s. She’ll also be available for informal appraisals on Saturday and Sunday – one pre-1975 item per person, please! For more time with Denise and other Betty Boop fans, there will be a meet and greet at the Hotel Mead Grand Avenue Tavern on Thursday evening, August 5, at 9:30 P.M. For early risers, Breakfast with Denise takes place on Sunday, August 8, at 8:00 A.M. Fans will have plenty of other opportunities to delve into the world of Betty Boop and animation legend Grim Natwick, considered to be one of the most influential animators of the 20th century. Thursday, August 5, kicks off with the 5:00 P.M. opening of an exhibit by renowned cartoonists Nina Paley and Dave Coverly, sure to get you in a great mood with their humorous insights on life. Refreshments and a chance to meet Nina in person are just two more reasons to mark this on your calendar. Later that evening, at 7:30 P.M., the Betty Boop Festival Revue opens at the Gilbert and Jaylee Mead Auditorium, with guest Broadway performer Tom Berklund leading a cast in a medley of music from the original Betty Boop era. Betty Boop collectors will want to cap off the evening with a 9:30 pm gathering at the Hotel Mead Grand Avenue Tavern and the chance to meet and greet with Betty Boop collectibles expert Denise Hagopian, director of the California Betty Boop Festival for nearly two decades. Friday, August 6, highlights include the dedication of a historical marker in honor of Grim Natwick at the South Wood County Historical Museum, and guided tour of the Grim Natwick and Betty Boop exhibit at the museum, led by Hollywood International Animation Society director Stephen Worth. Films are on offer too, of course, at the Grim Natwick Animated Film Festival, running all day Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Along with Betty Boop cartoons and vintage Hollywood classics, the festival will show newer Hollywood films as well as original films from Wisconsin filmmakers – who will be attending the festival to chat with audience members. Friday evening is a big night for the festival. That’s when the Betty Boop Bash kicks up its heels. Music, refreshments, live entertainment, photos with Betty, and lots of fun are guaranteed. The Bash begins at 6:30 pm and winds up at midnight. Feeling a burst of morning energy the next morning? There’s a Polio Run/Walk sponsored by the local Rotary club at 9:00 am on Saturday, complete with a T-shirt for participants. A Motorcycle Shine, Show & Ride and street vendors offering food, crafts and other souvenir items takes place all day Saturday and Sunday. If you missed the exhibits at the Historical Museum or the Cultural Center, they’ll both be open with tours and talks going on throughout the day. For performances, there are more films, repeat performances of the Betty Boop Festival Revue, and the Corvettes of the North evening festivities. Registration for a Motorcycle Shine, Show & Ride begins at 8 am on Saturday, August 7, but pre-registration is available online at the festival website, www.BettyBoopFestivalWi.com.  Advance registration includes a specially designed Betty Boop T-shirt – Betty looks great on her motorcycle! -- along with the escorted ride on Sunday. Vendors will be opening their booths at 10 am, and a DJ spins tunes beginning at 11 am. That’s also when judging of the motorcycles begins, lasting until mid-afternoon. The show concludes with the awarding of prizes at 4 pm, but there’s still time to visit vendor booths afterwards. And in the evening, Corvettes of the North holds its annual country music dance at Lion’s Park, located near one of the area’s many lakes. On Sunday, August 8, the Cranberry Highway motorcycle ride begins at 11:00 A.M., winding along country roads that offer a unique view of the cranberry bogs of central Wisconsin. The gentle landscape is adorned with ripe foliage, signs pointing the way to blueberry patches, and winding blacktop roads the pass by some of the oldest and most historic cranberry bogs in the U.S. The family owned and run businesses still carry the names of Wisconsin’s early settlers who spent years cultivating the tart native berry – one of only three fruits native to the U.S. – beginning 150 years ago. This is a festival you won’t want to miss! The Betty Boop Festival Wisconsin is a truly unique slice of Americana, and a fitting tribute to one of America’s and the world’s most beloved icons.
